For the past nine years, Morgan has dedicated her time to various roles within Parent Advisory Councils (PACs). From serving as the DPAC Rep, Secretary, and President of Hillcrest Elementary PAC to holding positions as Vice-Chair and currently Chair of Shuswap Middle School PAC, her commitment is unwavering. Through her experiences, she witnesses firsthand the significance of PAC involvement, which cultivates parental engagement and ensures that parents have a voice in shaping school policies and programs. Moreover, active participation in the PAC not only facilitates relationship-building among parents, teachers, and staff but also serves as a platform for advocating on crucial issues like educational equity and school funding. By being actively involved, parents empower themselves to play a vital role in their child's education and drive positive change within the school community.
Michelle is an involved parent at South Canoe Elementary, where her youngest son attends. She regularly engages with the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) and consistently volunteers her time to support school initiatives. In addition to her youngest, Michelle has three older children who have all gone through the SD83 school system, giving her a well-rounded perspective as a long-time district parent.
Her deep passion for child advocacy is reflected in a wide range of roles she has held over the years, including Pregnancy Outreach Worker, facilitator of a baby food community kitchen, founder of the Coats for Kids program (established in 1999), licensed childcare manager, food security advocate, and youth anger management educator.
Michelle brings a wealth of experience from her involvement on various committees, making her well-suited for the role of DPAC Secretary. She is excited to contribute her skills and collaborate with the team in this new capacity.
Melissa has five children currently attending three different schools in the district. Her involvement with PAC began 12 years ago when her oldest started kindergarten. Over the years, she has served as Vice Chair of the Carlin PAC and as both Chair and Treasurer of the South Canoe PAC. Being part of a school PAC has been an amazing opportunity for Melissa to meet other parents and families while staying informed about many aspects of the school community. After stepping away from PAC for a few years to focus on family matters, she has since returned, realizing how encouraging the experience is and how much she missed feeling connected to the school family.
The District PAC includes non-voting members, which is all parents with children enrolled in the district. The voting members of the DPAC are the delegates elected annually by individual school Parent Advisory Councils (PACs), or in their absence, a PAC designated alternate with one (1) vote per PAC.
